NAT: Respeaking -
An Introduction for T & I Professionals

Live Webinar
Friday 26 June 2020

EVENT CLOSED

Respeaking is a relatively new area of professional practice which has attracted a lot of interest from academia, industry and language professionals in recent years. It is one of the techniques used to create live subtitles for television, conferences, lectures, meetings, webinars and other live on-site or on-line events, using speech recognition software.

Intralingual respeaking refers to the production of subtitles in the same language, mainly to create accessibility for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, while interlingual respeaking involves the translation of the original speech into another language to produce live subtitles for audiences with a different language background.

Interlingual respeaking brings together the areas of accessibility, audiovisual translation and interpreting, offering language professionals the possibility of exploring it as a new area of professional practice. In this interactive webinar, I will introduce this highly specialised technique, explain what respeaking involves, bring the audience up to speed with the latest academic research in the area, share my own experience as a professional respeaker, and provide other interesting information about this exciting new profession.

This webinar is suitable for both translators and interpreters interested in exploring respeaking as a new area of professional practice, or for those who just want to find out what’s new in the industry.

Presenter

Nancy Guevara is one the world’s first qualified interlingual respeakers. She started working on developing this complex skill in 2017, when she completed an intralingual respeaking (English) in-house training program at Macquarie University and subsequently worked subtitling pre-recorded academic lectures using respeaking techniques.

Last year, she completed an Interlingual Respeaking Specialisation Program (English - Spanish) with the University of Vigo and worked as part of a live subtilling team for a large game development conference broadcasted on-line from the Netherlands.

She currently works for a subtitling company based in the USA and Ai-Media (UK), providing remote live subtitles for on-line events, and offers her services on a freelance basis to clients world-wide. Her latest assignments included live subtitling of webinars for UNICEF, Hewlett Packard, Galderma and the University College London. She has over 15 years’ experience as a Spanish certified translator in Australia and is currently nearing completion of a Master of Audiovisual Translation, Subtitling and Dubbing with the University of Cadiz.
