Deanne Lightfoot
on Aboriginal Language Interpreting in WA

We are very pleased to welcome Deanne to speak on the occasion of our AGM and Student Excellence Awards. She will speak about her experience running Aboriginal Interpreting WA (AIWA), WA’s only Indigenous language interpreting service. Please join us to learn more about our State's Aboriginal languages (there are over 50!), what AIWA does and their unique work of providing interpreting services in northern WA.

Biography

Deanne is a leader in the field of interpreting, with 15 years’ experience supporting Aboriginal interpreting in the Kimberley and across WA. Working collaboratively with AIWA directors and the industry across delivery, education, advocacy and policy, she has helped bring the need for Aboriginal language interpreters to the forefront of public policy. Deanne maintains the position that it is a basic human right for people to understand and be understood in their preferred language, whether that is a version of English or a traditional mother tongue.

All members are cordially invited to attend the meeting!  Places limited to 50, so register early to assure your place.  Don't miss the opportunity to learn about the work of your Branch Committee over the past 12 months.  Please note, only current financial members can vote.  Non-financial members are more than welcome as observers.
