Literary translation is not an easy endeavour. One of the biggest challenges in this arena is the balance to remain true to the original work while creating an entirely unique piece that evokes the same responses as the original piece.

This webinar will be an opportunity to examine some of those challenges, share experiences, and explore opportunities and trends in the industry.  

This event will showcase five distinguished literary translators and researchers from around Australia and the world to discuss the work they have been doing in this extraordinary field that transcends language and culture and to offer insights into the journey they once embarked upon.

Toni Pollard

A graduate in Indonesian and Malayan Studies from Sydney University, Toni became one of the first high school teachers of Indonesian language in Australia in 1967. 

She first took up literary translation on her retirement from the University of Western Sydney in 2004. Since then, Toni has contributed several books to the Jakarta publisher Lontar’s Modern Library of Indonesia series; has translated countless short stories for the UWRF’s annual bilingual anthology of emerging writers; and has been featured at international book fairs (Frankfurt 2015, London 2019). 

Her current translation project is an anthology of stories by contemporary writer Nukila Amal. She is cofounder and moderator of Sydney’s Indo Lit Club, a monthly discussion group focussing on Indonesian writers in translation.

 Lilit Žekulin Thwaites

Lilit is an award-winning Australian literary translator, and an honorary research fellow at La Trobe University, whose academic specialisation is the work of women writers. Her numerous accolades include winner of the 2021 AAWP/Ubud Translator’s Prize, the 2020 AILASA Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to her discipline and for fostering Iberian and Latin American studies; the Spanish Order of Civil Merit by the King of Spain in 2016 for her contribution to the promotion of Spanish culture in Australia; and a 2015 grant from the Melbourne UNESCO City of Literature Travel Fund.

Lilit’s translations of Spanish short stories, essays and the occasional poem have been published in various journals and anthologies. Her two most recent book-length translations are: The Librarian of Auschwitz, selected as a Publisher’s Weekly Book of the Year and winner of the Gold Medal Sydney Taylor 2018 Book Awards; and Australian Connection, a trilingual anthology of short texts by 15 Spanish authors who have visited Australia. Her translation of Tears in Rain, by eminent Spanish author Rosa Montero, was recognised by World Literature Today as one of the 75 Notable Translations of 2012.

Lilit regularly speaks at writers’ festivals, lectures on Spanish-related topics, organises visits to Australia by Spanish-speaking writers, and features as a commentator on matters Spanish in the media.

Rick (Lintao) Qi

Dr. Lintao Qi is a lecturer of Translation Studies at Monash University, Australia. His research interests include various aspects of literary translation theory and practice with a special focus on translation and reception of Chinese literature overseas, and Australian literature in China through translation. He is author of Jin Ping Mei English Translations: Texts, Paratexts, and Contexts (Routledge, 2018) and co-editor of A Century of Chinese Literature in Translation: English Publication and Reception (Routledge, 2020). Lintao is a NAATI-certified translator, National Education Committee member of AUSIT (Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators), committee member of AALITRA (Australian Association for Literary Translation), and editor of The Aalitra Review.

 Jorge Salavert

Jorge  holds a degree in English Philology from the University of Valencia and a master’s degree in Translation Studies from the ANU. Based in Australia since 1996, Jorge combines Spanish tuition for Australian diplomats with his professional translation work. 

His experience in literary translation into Spanish includes several of Shakespeare’s plays and a broad range of short stories, essays, and poems in various online and printed magazines. Since his first visit to Australia in 1995, Jorge developed a keen interest in the translation of Australian literature into Spanish and Catalan. His two most recent translations are Catalan editions of two Australian writers, Després de l’amor by Canberra-based Subhash Jaireth and Diari íntim d’un editor by Melbourne-based Ouyang Yu. He regularly blogs about books, translations, bushwalks, and other cultural topics on Notas Literarias.

 Claudia Schneider 

Claudia is a Melbourne based translator and subtitler working in the English/German language pair. Since 2018 Claudia has been part of a two-person team translating the poetry of Peter Bakowski. Her poetry translations have been published in literary journals locally and overseas.
