Presentations and group discussion on ethical issues arising when translating personal documents, including identity documents

Translators engaged in translating personal documents for clients may encounter ethical issues for several reasons, which may range from clients’ inappropriate expectations through to the occasional dishonest or unethical client.

This workshop will explore these aspects in two parts, each consisting of a short presentation followed by a group discussion and a recap by the presenter.

Part 1 will focus on reasons – particularly cultural reasons – why clients might have inappropriate expectations about the translation process, and how these might be at odds with the translator’s ethical obligations; the group discussion will allow participants to share their experiences of client ‘mis-expectations’.

Part 2 will focus on more general ethical issues relating to translation of personal documents, with a number of scenarios for group discussion, again followed by a recap from the presenter.

Biography of presenter

Dave Deck has practiced as a translator and interpreter in Indonesian and Malay for about 28 years, and presented on test preparation workshops for both translating and interpreting candidates in NAATI’s Melbourne office for 16 years. He has also been involved over a number of years in developing and conducting training for NAATI examiners, as well as being a member of NAATI’s Technical Reference Advisory Committee for 2 years.

Formerly an education officer in the Air Force for 24 years, in 1995 he returned to the Defence Force School of Languages as a civilian instructor in Indonesian, and then became their Assessments Officer before retiring from Defence in 2009.   From 2006 to 2014 he taught the theoretical aspects of T&I (plus Indonesian translating and interpreting) as a sessional lecturer on the Advanced Diploma and Masters programs at RMIT University.

After retiring from regular teaching at RMIT, he joined the VIC/TAS (now VIC) branch committee of AUSIT, becoming chair of the committee for several years and presenting at PD workshops in Melbourne and Hobart. He was a member of the AUSIT National Council from 2014 to 2020, the last four years as National Secretary. He and his wife have recently moved to Canberra to be closer to family.
