NSW: International Translation Day 2021 - In Unity We Stand

Each year, translators, interpreters and terminologists celebrate
International Translation Day on 30 September. 

FIT’s chosen theme for this year is United in Translation, which has inspired us to dedicate this year’s special ITD event to discussing the achievements and the challenges ahead in ensuring dignified and appropriate working conditions for translators and interpreters in Australia.

• How can we advocate for our rights with LSPs and clients?
• How has the increasing demand for remote work affected standards of practice?
• How can we ensure appropriate contractual conditions and decent remuneration?
• What are some of the key wins in this area and the hurdles still ahead?

If you are interested in any of these questions, please join AUSIT NSW in this special ITD event to discuss and search for answers with a dedicated panel of I/T practitioners, unionists, and educators.

This event will be moderated by the AUSIT NSW Committee.

Presenters

Niki Baras graduated with a BA Interpreting/Translating from Victoria College (Deakin University) in 1985 and has been practising as a professional interpreter and translator in Greek<>English ever since - with intermittent stints in project management at translation companies and teaching interpreting and translation (RMIT) throughout her 30+ year career in language services. She is also a founding member and currently the National Organiser for Translators and Interpreters at Professionals Australia (Translators and Interpreters Australia).

Dr Uldis Ozolins is one of the best published authors in the Interpreting & Translation area in Australia, and with an international reputation particularly through the Critical Link conferences andpublications. He currently teaches at both Western Sydney and RMIT Universities, is a practitioner, and was a lead author on the rewriting of the AUSIT Code of Ethics in 2012.

Silvia Martinez is a NAATI-Certified Interpreter and Translator (Spanish<>English), who has concentrated her interpreting practice on conference and legal interpreting. She works on a freelance and casual employment basis, both with private clients and through agencies contracted to provide interpreting services in courts and tribunals.

Silvia also worked as research assistant to Prof. Sandra Hale on the project that led to Interpreter Policies, Practices and Protocols in Australian Courts and Tribunals, published in 2011 by AIJA, and which laid important groundwork for the development of the JCCD’s Recommended National Standards for Working with Interpreters in Courts and Tribunals. And she is, of course, a member of AUSIT and of Translators and Interpreters Australia (Professionals Australia).
