In this webinar, Associate Professor Georgina Heydon (RMIT University) will present an introduction to the questioning strategies used in police interviews. From her perspective as a forensic linguist, Georgina will explain the relevance of specific interviewing techniques for interpreters. She will explain the development of the main approaches taken in different parts of the world, including Australia, and why this is relevant to interpreters today.

Biography of Presenter

Associate Professor Georgina Heydon, PhD, B.A. Hons (Linguistics) Forensic Linguist “…the leading expert in Australia, if not the world, on interviewing techniques and their efficacy.” Justice Peter Gray (Federal Court of Australia, ret)


A/Prof Georgina Heydon (RMIT University, Australia) is an internationally recognised expert in the field of forensic linguistics and investigative interviewing, and has published numerous academic papers and books, on the topic of interviewing and information elicitation. 

As a forensic linguist A/Prof Heydon provides expert evidence on police interviewing tactics, threat identification, and authorship. She has delivered interviewing training and advice to police and legal professionals in Australia, the USA, Sweden, Belgium, Indonesia, South Africa, China, the Philippines, Mozambique and Canada.  She has been an invited guest speaker of national judicial colleges, the FBI, the European Police College and many police academies as well as lawyer firms and corporate clients. She is currently the Immediate Past President of the International Association of Forensic Linguists.
