Session 2 - Chuchotage in Community Settings

Chuchotage,
also known as whispered interpreting, involves sitting behind one participant and interpreting, simultaneously, in a low voice. It is used in interpreting in community settings such as in court, in some health care settings and in information sessions. It is a skill tested at the NAATI certified interpreter test (Simultaneous Monologue).  This session will cover some of the theory behind simultaneous interpreting (SI) and basic techniques. It will also show examples of chuchotage in community settings and cover challenges and strategies which are useful in this mode.
The session will include practical exercises and chuchotage practice and it will clearly explain the NAATI simultaneous monologue task and expected competence levels.

This course is suitable for CPI or Recognised Practicing interpreters who wish to improve their skills or who are planning to sit for the NAATI CI test.
