Session 3 - Note Taking Techniques for Consecutive Monologues

Interpreting is telling a story by conveying the whole message, including extra-linguistic features. Using memory and visualization in this process is crucial. Notes are a crutch when our memory capacity is exhausted in longer and complex segments.  Taking efficient notes is an essential skill in the Consecutive Monologue task at the NAATI Certified Interpreter test.  This session will cover note taking techniques and strategies, such as cue word selection, simplification, abbreviation, and symbols in order to structure notes effectively (and decode them).  The session will include practical exercises and note-taking practice and it will clearly explain the NAATI consecutive monologue task and expected competence levels.

This course is suitable for CPI or Recognised Practicing interpreters who wish to improve their skills or who are planning to sit for the NAATI CI test.
