Learn how to be a Translation Masterclass host and consolidate the skills to lead a Masterclass for your language combination.

Dear Colleague

The Masterclass formula has been tried and tested. Introduced by Yveline Piller in the French-English combination and presented at the 2020 AUSIT Conference, the Masterclass has enthusiastically been adopted by the Portuguese language colleagues.

Learn how to use this resource to develop translation skills in your specific combination. This webinar is aimed at practitioners who wish to host a Translation Masterclass in their language pair.

What is a Translation Masterclass?

The idea is simple:

A text in English or LOTE is distributed and participants send in their translations by email to the host.

The host selects two or three random anonymous translations for discussion. The host then puts the source text (ST) and the versions on the screen and leads the discussion, giving the floor to different participants as the group goes line by line contrasting the ST to the two versions and expressing their opinions and suggesting alternatives.

The aim is to write down a new collectively agreed translation.

This exercise is intended to promote the exchange of opinions, appreciate different perspectives and fine-tune style, all in a spirit of professional solidarity.

Presenter - J. Angelo Berbotto

Angelo is a certified Spanish-English translator specialising in legal texts. He is currently enrolled in the T&I program at UNSW. More info about Angelo here.

This event is open to all current AUSIT Members only.  To ensure that a wider representation of language combinations is achieved, it may be necessary to limit the attendance of participants from the same language combination. Please identify your language specialty in your registration.
