NSW Branch Presents: Family Law for Translators and Interpreters Live Webinar via Zoom Online Saturday 21 May 202210.00am - 12.00pm AEST
REGISTRATIONS CLOSED Learn the basics about Australian Family Law to assist you in your interpreting and translation assignments. Dear Colleague, Context is key in translating and interpreting. The aim of this webinar is to present Australian Family Law in an interactive and sequential way: starting with marriage, separation, divorce and also matters where the State interferes with family life to safeguard children (known as Care and Protection) and matters when parents remove a child from the child’s country of habitual residence without the consent of the other parent (known as child abduction). Who is this webinar for? It is aimed at practitioners that are new to T/I or who are not familiar with Australian Family Law. The webinar has been designed with T/I practitioners in mind, rather than lawyers; therefore, concepts are explained and examples used. Participants will gain an understanding on the Australian institutions involved in Family Law, how the federal and state/territory institutions interact, how to search legal authorities relevant to the Australian context, etc.

Angelo Berbotto A Spanish-English Certified Translator, Angelo obtained an LLB(Hons) from the University of Technology, Sydney and qualified as a solicitor in Australia in 2005 and in England in 2010. He worked in commercial litigation until 2007 when he received a scholarship to undertake a Master in Children's Law at La Sapienza University of Rome. Since then, Angelo has worked mainly in family law and child protection as a solicitor advocate. In 2015, he was appointed Crown Counsel for the British Overseas Territory of St Helena in order to deal with concerns about safeguarding issues and became Attorney-General for the territory a year later. He is currently concentrating on legal translation and is undertaking the MA in Translation and Interpreting at UNSW.

Certificates Certificates for PD purposes may take approximately two (2) weeks to be released following the event.
