Language-specific Webinar - Portuguese Practitioners

Most Portuguese into English NAATI translators encounter a wide variety of criminal and police clearance certificates issued by various Brazilian authorities. They are often technically different from each other and may present challenges for translators without sound knowledge of legal terminology in Portuguese and English.

The purpose of this workshop is to discuss some of the specific terminology found in these documents to assist translators in making better-informed translation decisions. We will use a Federal Justice Certificate as a starting point and focus on some of the complex expressions to translate, such as ‘Certidão de Distribuição’, ‘Ações e Execuções Civeis’, among others.

This workshop will be co-hosted by Juliana Frantz and Gabriela Church with the assistance of Angelo Berbotto.

The document we will work on during the workshop is attached HERE

Please send an email with your translation of this document to Juliana at juliafrantz@yahoo.com by 5.00pm Friday 17 June 2022 in order to receive the link to participate in the workshop.

You are also welcome to email additional questions relating to challenges in translating other types of clearance certificates. Translations will be anonymised to preserve confidentiality.

Program:

18:30 – “Doors open” – participants welcome - networking and introductions.

19:00 – Workshop starts – introduction to the document, a brief discussion of current issues and different translation results.

19:15 – Break-out room discussions – participants will be divided into small breakout rooms, each moderated by an experienced translator so that all participants are involved in the discussion and each group can workshop their versions.

20:00 – Return to the main room and presentation of the results from each group. Attempt to solve the difficulties and obtain solutions.

20:30 – Conclusion of Workshop.
