PD EVENT:

A professional development event by Dr Uldis Ozolins will be held after the AGM at 12.30pm, which requires separate registration. Please ensure that you register for both the AGM and the PD separately to receive the relevant Zoom links.

Here is a quick note about the event:

“A step back to the bigger picture: the changing linguistic landscape of Australia” by Dr. Uldis Ozolins – 12:30pm to 1:30pm

This PD session takes a step back from the daily practitioner issues in Interpreting & Translation to look at the evolving language ecology of Australia. It briefly surveys the history of language policy in this country, and uses Census data to show important shifts in the salience of Languages Other than English, and an abiding presence of significant numbers who speak English poorly. It finishes with some ongoing thoughts on both language maintenance and language loss.

Dr Ozolins is a teacher, researcher, and practitioner of Interpreting & Translation, and is one of the best published authors in this field in Australia. He has taught at several Australian universities, currently at Western Sydney and RMIT. He is author of The Politics of Language in Australia (CUP 1993) and co-author of Liaison Interpreting (MUP 1996) and of Community Translation (Bloomsbury 2016). He led the team rewriting the AUSIT Code of Ethics in 2012.

For additional information or any queries, please contact the branch at nsw@ausit.org.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, 10 September 2022!
