A Framework for Interpreting in Police Interviews in Western Australia

AUSIT WA is pleased to welcome Detective Senior Sergeant Bruce BOWERS, and Detective Sergeant Brian HILL, from the Investigative Standards Unit of the WA Police Force, to discuss working with interpreters during Police Interviews conducted in Western Australia.

The presentation will cover the following topics:

  • Purpose and main characteristics of a Police Interview – structure / location / length / dynamics;
  • Techniques used in Police Interviews in WA: differences between Suspect, Perpetrator, Victim and Witness;
  • Audio/Video recording of the Interview, legal implications;
  • Challenges faced by Interpreters during the Police Interview: jargon, professional recognition, vicarious trauma;
  • Police terminology & development of an interview glossary;
  • Facts and Myths surrounding how Police work with Interpreters.

Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions, with light refreshments and time for networking provided.
