This webinar is aimed at interpreting practitioners and will provide an overview of interpreting in the health settings. Participants will be introduced to organisational cultural competence in the health context and the challenges faced by patients with limited English proficiency.

The focus will be on the role of the interpreter with practical examples of various interpreting scenarios, including interpreting for voluntary assisted dying (VAD).
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and get involved in discussing the different ethical challenges in the scenarios.


Presenter -
Stefania Zen

Stefania Zen is Education and Engagement Manager for Transcultural and Language Services (TALS) and Narrun Wilip-Giin Aboriginal Support Unit at Northern Health.

She has been working at Northern Health since 2008 and has developed a sound knowledge of the healthcare and rehabilitation services and is a strong advocate for the importance of engaging professional interpreters.

In her current role, Stefania is responsible for the management of Cultural Competence education across all Northern Health sites and provides regular training to health professionals. She is frequently involved in quality improvement and research activities, is co-author of the research paper  'Does English proficiency improve health outcomes for patients undergoing stroke rehabilitation?' (2015) and has contributed to the development of the Competency Standards Framework for clinicians ‘Culturally responsive clinical practice: working with people form migrant and refugee backgrounds’ (2019) developed by the Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health partnership.

Stefania is also a NAATI Certified Italian Interpreter/Translator/Examiner with over 15 years’ experience working in the health context and is very committed to making a difference in patients’ health outcomes.
