The AUSIT WA Branch Annual General Meeting for 2023 will be held on Saturday 9 September 2023, from 2:30 to 4:30pm, at the University of WA, Laws Lecture Room 1 [LAWS: G31].
The Annual General Meeting is a chance for language professionals in WA to catch up, hear about the work of the AUSIT WA branch and get involved with your branch committee.

Schedule of the event and AGM

2:30 to 3:30 pm – Interpreting in confrontational settings: challenges, strategies and ethical considerations.

This Professional Development session is presented by our committee member Corinne Perrin, NAATI certified French interpreter for 20 years.

Corinne was conferred a Masters’ degree with Excellence from the University of New South Wales in 2021, she is a recipient of the AUSIT Student Excellence Award 2022 and a member of AUSIT Communications committee. Corinne also worked full time for 15 years internationally in a corporate and government communications capacity for energy companies with projects in West Africa.

In 2019, Corinne interpreted in a series of assignments in the mental health setting in Perth. The LOTE speaker was aggressive and confrontational. This experience led her to review both what had challenged and supported her in her practice. Corinne wanted to find out if other interpreters had encountered confrontational situations and how they dealt with them. She conducted this research project under the supervision of Professors Sandra Hale and Ludmila Stern in the Master of Interpreting program at UNSW.
In this presentation, Corinne will report on the results of the survey she conducted in 2021 and open a discussion with interpreters on their experiences.

Topics covered will include: interpreting challenges - confrontation - mental health setting – police setting -  code of ethics – interpreting emotions – vicarious trauma.

Light refreshments and networking opportunity provided during the break, before the start of the AGM.

3:30 to 4:30 pm - AGM
