AUSIT NAT Presents

A workshop on Chinese⇔English Translation and Interpreting in Action

Webinar Via Zoom
  Saturday 2 September 2023

10.30 am - 12.30 pm AEST

Please register by 12pm Wednesday 30 August 2023

This workshop will be conducted bilingually, in both Mandarin and English.

The first segment is on translation. A number of sample translations will be presented to highlight the imperative to fully leverage the unique advantages of the human mind over AI. The examples will cover a wide array of subject matter, from literature (including poetry, the translation of which into another tongue from a different language family is by and large an exercise in futility unless used as a cerebral workout to put the translator’s mind through its paces within highly restrictive parameters) to straitlaced official documents of the UN.

The second segment is on interpreting, and is UN-specific. One sample English statement in the public domain will be displayed and “sight interpretation” demonstrated, with comments thrown in now and again on how to navigate the challenges.

This will be followed by a Chinese statement displayed on the screen. The participants are encouraged to activate their recording devices (e.g. a voice recorder app on their smartphone) and record their own sight interpretation. They will NOT be asked to share their recordings, but this second statement will be discussed in detail afterwards.
