Celebrating International Translation Day with a Free Webinar on AUSIT-FECCA Community Translation Guidelines

Fellow translators, interpreters, and linguists, it is the time of the year! Let us get together and celebrate International Translation Day (ITD) on 30 Sept 2023.

This year's theme is "Translation Unveils the Many Faces of Humanity". Working in Australia, T&I practitioners are constantly reminded of our important roles in bridging the gaps and empowering vulnerable members of our community. With the upcoming Voice Referendum and numerous for- and against- messages to be translated and communicated to Australians with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, what better time to talk about the AUSIT-FECCA Community Translations Guideline and the role it plays in supporting and enabling translators to achieve greater communication outcomes?

AUSIT has invited key members of the AUSIT-FECCA working group to share their stories behind the development of the Guidelines, as well as how you can use the Guidelines to support your work and achieve better communication outcomes. The webinar will start with a brief overview of the Guidelines, followed by a panel discussion. All practitioners are welcome to attend the webinar and join the discussion.

Biography - Associate Professor Mustapha Taibi

Associate Professor Mustapha Taibi is the leader of the International Community Translation Research Group and Editor-in-Chief of Translation & Interpreting.  He has been teaching translation, interpreting, pragmatics and intercultural communication at Western Sydney University. His main research interests are community interpreting and translation. His publications include Community Translation  (2016, Bloomsbury), New Insights into Arabic Translation and Interpreting (2016, Multilingual Matters), Translating for the Community (2018, Multilingual Matters), Multicultural Health Translation, Interpreting and Communication, co-edited with Meng Ji and Ineke Crezee (2019, Routledge), and Translating Cultures, co-authored with David Katan (2021, Routledge).


Biography - Cintia Lee

Cintia Lee is a Certified Interpreter and a Certified Translator (Spanish<>English). She holds a degree in English philology (linguistics and translation) from the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. Cintia’s extensive experience in translating includes financial reports and technical documents, court documents, promotional and educational materials, two promotional books, personal documents for migration purposes and, particularly, translations of government information for Australia’s Spanish-speaking communities. Cintia is passionate about increasing the quality of community translation in Australia and regularly engages in professional development activities.  Cintia is a tutor of translation and interpreting for RMIT University and an interpreting tutor for TAFE SA, as well as a court interpreting educator for Multicultural NSW.

Biography - Peter Pei

Peter Pei is a seasoned Chinese Translator and Mandarin Interpreter with a decade of experience in Australia's T&I sector. As a NAATI-certified professional, Peter's expertise extends beyond just translation. He dedicated three productive years to managing a range of translation projects at a leading agency, overseeing everything from initial translation to final revision, even dabbling in translating and typesetting brochures and marketing materials. To date, he has translated and checked over 10 million English words and currently holds a position at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, where he not only contributes as an in-house translator but also plays a crucial role in developing the Chinese Style Guide for translation standards.  Peter also teaches translation at RMIT University and often receives requests from various organisations seeking his expertise for translation and linguistic assessments.
