AUSIT NSW Presents: Masterclass on Forensic Transcription and Translation

Interpreters and translators are often engaged by law enforcement to translate exchanges caught on voice or video recordings from other languages into English for forensic purposes.

Often the quality of these recordings is poor, and the context of the communication is unclear, making the translation extremely challenging. This masterclass is for you if you have done work in this area and felt unsure about:

• how to present what you hear, or can’t hear, on paper;
• what translation strategy should you adopt, e.g., meaning-based or literal;
• how much translator’s notes should you include;
• the amount of information the law enforcement officer gives you, e.g. too little or too much;
• whether you can identify the same speaker across different recordings;
• whether you can share insights about place of origin or accent of the speaker in the recording.

Biography - Dr Miranda Lai

Dr Miranda Lai is a senior lecturer in interpreting and translating studies at RMIT University. She completed a PhD in interpreter-mediated police interviews, and co-authored two books on the topic: Police Investigative Interviews and Interpreting and Ethics for Police Translators and Interpreters. She has recently published a paper on Australian interpreters and translators undertaking Forensic Transcription and Translation assignments. Read about the main findings of the paper here.

Biography - Mr. Steve Elkanovich

Mr Steve Elkanovich is an Assistant Director Language Services at the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission. He studied linguistics at the University of New South Wales and interpreting and translation at the Belarusian State Linguistic University. Steve has over forty years of professional experience and worked as a professional Interpreter and Translator in Europe, Africa and Australia, specialising in investigative and forensic translation and interpreting. He also taught languages and interpreting for many years at Sydney Institute of Technology (TAFE). He is a NAATI Certified Professional Interpreter and Translator and has been an AUSIT member since 1996. Read about his recent In Touch article here.
