A panel discussion designed to explore the multifaceted impact of artificial intelligence on the fields of translation and interpreting.

In an era where AI technologies are advancing at an unprecedented pace, this event seeks to unravel the complexities and opportunities these innovations present to translators and interpreters.

Our panel will feature a diverse group of thought leaders, including AI trainers, seasoned translators and interpreters, T&I scholars, and ethics specialists, who will provide a comprehensive view on the evolving landscape of AI and its implications for the future of the T&I profession.

We will probe into how AI is reshaping the industry, the potential threats it poses to traditional roles, and the new opportunities it opens for enhanced accuracy, efficiency, and accessibility in cross-lingual communication.

Biography of Panellists

Nora Díaz

Nora Díaz is an English-Spanish translator and conference interpreter who enjoys using technology and finding ways to increase productivity. Nora is the Chair of the American Translators Association Professional Development Committee. She is also one of the co-organizers of the AI in Translation Summit. She has co-authored a book called The Translator’s Tool Box and was listed as one of the Top 30 Women in the Language Industry by Multilingual Magazine in 2023.

Sam Berner

Sam Berner is a QLD-based legal translator with almost four decades of working experience. Prior to coming to Australia, she lived for over twenty years in the Middle East and North Africa, teaching, publishing and translating. During those years Sam worked for several regional and international publishing houses, as well as the UNICEF and UNHCR in conflict zones. She is a tutor at RMIT and a NAATI examiner.

Michael Broughton

Michael Broughton is a freelance English-Chinese translator. His linguistic work covers the whole gamut, from Chinese opera at the Sydney Opera House to TikTok UX content to advertising for a Chinese baijiu company. Michael moved into the teaching profession and was previously lecturing in translation at the University of Melbourne and then Beijing Foreign Studies University. He is now undertaking a PhD in an obscure ancient Chinese text.

Jia Zhang

Jia Zhang is a PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales. He previously served as a lecturer of translation at Sun Yat-sen University for six years and a lecturer of applied translation studies at Beijing Normal University – Hong Kong Baptist University United International College for four years. His current research centred on the integration of machine translation into translator training. Jia is also a NAATI certified translator (Chinese < > English), and has been a translator since 2007.

Harry Wang

Harry Wang, a conference interpreter from Hong Kong, has worked as a freelancer for nearly a decade since earning his master's degree in interpreting from HK PolyU. Harry teaches translation and interpreting to both undergraduate and graduate students on a casual basis at universities in Hong Kong and is currently pursuing a doctorate in interpreting with a focus on practice-based research. Harry incorporates technology, ranging from basic gadgets to advanced GPT-based tools, into his interpreting work.
