Orient yourself in a court setting


Interpreters, do you feel confident in a court setting?

Join AUSIT WA at the Magistrates Court to learn best practice guidelines for working in a courtroom setting. Take advantage of this opportunity to familiarise yourself with the environment and understand more about the different roles and functions of staff and legal personnel.  There will be a focus on raising practical awareness of the Recommended National Standards for Working with Interpreters in Courts and Tribunals (launched in October 2017).

 

Programme features:

  • Interpreter booking process - by Ella Davies.
  • Overview of the roles and functions of the various people present in the courtroom. Discussion of specific Standards relating to interpreters as officers of the court, including their positioning in the courtroom, facilities required, appropriate breaks as recommended to support interpreters- by Rocco Loiacono.
  • Staff from the Perth Magistrates Court have been approached to be present to answer questions (subject to availability).
  • Presentation of case studies by experienced interpreters and discussion of problem-solving techniques.
  • Networking with light refreshments.

 

Important points to note: 

  • There will be a short security process upon entry at the courts, so please arrive with time to spare.
  • Online tickets available until the day of. Manual processing at the door is not encouraged but can be done by credit card only and incurs an extra admin fee of $10.00. If you are thinking about applying for membership, note that new members can access discounts before the application is finalised, and first-time membership rates are pro-rated.
