Presenter - Glenine Hamlyn

Glenine Hamlyn AE
is an Accredited Editor with the
Institute of Professional Editors, IPEd (since 2014) and a NAATI Certified Translator (German>English, since 2020). She cut her teeth on editing at an educational publisher in Germany in the 1990s, producing materials for the teaching of English in German secondary schools. In 2004 she returned to Australia after 24 years in Germany, and, following six years in ecumenical leadership, again took up editing and translating in a freelance capacity. Glenine began her working life as a teacher of German and English in Queensland, and during studies in Germany (she holds an MA in Theology from the University of Tübingen) she taught English and translated academic texts into English to earn her keep. In Germany she also worked in international development for eight years, later acting as a consultant in the Pacific following her return to Australia. Translation and editing have played a role in almost all the positions Glenine has filled. She currently serves voluntarily as executive member and affiliation officer with Editors Queensland, a branch of IPEd.

Overview

  • Is it true that the ‘best translator is also an editor’? (from Ann Conti Morcos)
  • What is editing? Is it the same as proofreading?
  • What does an editor do? What is ‘post-editing’?

The terminology surrounding these activities is highly confusing. We will untangle the terminology, examine the role of an editor and explore possible intersections between translation and editing. Glenine is keen to hear your insights.

Using examples, we will look at some common issues of grammar and style in English and determine how an editor might deal with these. Glenine will share some online sources of guidance.
